FORT MYERS, Fla – Seniors Ebonie Halliburton, Alex Kwiecinska and Candy Myers played their last home game in Alico Arena today in the FGCU National Independent Tournament versus the University of District of Columbia. The Eagles defeated the Firebirds 78-42 claiming the tournament title with two players named to the All-Tournament team. Juniors Katie Schrader (Fort Collins, CO) and Alex Nelson (Edinburgh, Scottland) received All-Tournament honors for FGCU. Schrader named MVP of the Independent Tournament walked alway with 49 points in the three games, including 24 points versus Claflin University. Schrader also collected 24 rebounds in the tournament. She leads the team with 159 total rebounds and 434 points this season. Nelson posted 25 points total in the tournament with 17 rebounds. Against UDC in the championship, Nelson was third on the team in points with 11. She had seven rebounds, two assists and a steal in 23 minutes of play. Halliburton shined in the championship for the Eagles. She led the team with a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Halliburton also collected seven assists to lead the team and added a steal. Junior Jen Conely (Warren, MN) was strong from the arc landing four threes and a jumper for 14 points along with six rebounds. Senior Candy Myers scored nine points with four assists and five rebounds. As at team the Eagles shot 39 percent in field-goals and 80 percent from the free-throw line. They had 10 steals to the Firebirds eight and kept their turnovers down to 11 total. Leading scorer for the Firebirds was senior Deidra Bumbrey (Staten Island, NY) with 12 points, three rebounds, two steals and an assists. She was also named to the All-Tournament team along with her team-mate senior Jamie Brown (Harrisburg, PA) who scored 11 points. The (28-1) Eagles ranked 12th in the nation and fifth in the region are expected to be one of the eight teams who will be selected to the South Region tournament. The final weekly regional rankings are scheduled for Wednesday, March 1. The tournament brackets will be announced on Sunday, March 5.
