Adrianne McNally scored a career-high 20 points in the Eagles 74-40 win over UTPA.
FORT MYERS, Fla. - Adrianne McNally scored a career-high 20 points and five Eagles scored in double-figures as FGCU defeated Texas Pan-American 74-40 to advance to the Championship Game of the FGCU Holiday Classic.
The Eagles improve to 4-5 overall, while the Broncos fall to 6-5. The Broncos jumped on the Eagles early, as they opened the game with a 21-7 run. During UTPA’s run, which was capped by a Tamara Vaughn three-pointer at the 9:33 mark, FGCU looked out of synch and were unable to knock down the open looks at the basket.
In the final nine minutes of the half, the Eagles looked like a totally different team as they outscored the Broncos 28-4 to end the half. The run began with three consecutive three-pointers including back-to-back three’s by Mandi Pierce (Altoona, Pa.). McNally (Howell, Mich.), Chelsea Dermyer (Fort Collins, Col.), Delia De La Torre (Las Cruces, N.M.) and Ashley Haegele (Imperial, Mo.) all contributed during the game-changing run. The 28-4 FGCU run also included six three-pointers.
In the second half, FGCU continued their dominance and went on to outscore Texas Pan-American 39-15 in the second half to win by the final of 74-40. The Eagles 34-point victory is their largest margin of victory this season.
For the game, the Eagles shot 41.5 percent (27-of-65) from the field and knocked down an amazing 14 three-pointers. McNally drained 5-of-7 shots from long-range and also registered two rebounds and two steals to go along with her game-high 20 points. De La Torre finished with 12 points and seven boards in 22 minutes of action. Pierce chipped in with 11 points, five rebounds and four assists. The Eagles also got a lift from Haegele and Dermyer as they both accounted for 10 points.
Tiona Wilson and Aleeya Grigsby led UTPA with 13 points and 11 points, respectively. LeKeisha Gray, the Broncos leading scorer (15.6 ppg), was shutout of the scoring column and only managed three shot attempts in 27 minutes of floor time. UTPA collectively shot 40.5 percent (15-of-37) from the field, including 63.6 percent (7-of-11) from long-distance.
FGCU will face Memphis in championship game of the FGCU Holiday Classic following the consolation game between Loyola and UTPA. Tip-off for the championship game is set for 7 p.m.
