Senior Chelsea Dermyer had another strong game at the PG postion for the Eagles by posting a team-high 16 points and eight assists.
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Chelsea Dermyer scored a team-high 16 points and Ashley Haegele recorded her first career double-double as the Eagles defeated Mercer 84-45 on Monday night to win their third consecutive Atlantic Sun conference game.
After pulling ahead 5-2, in the first 1:11 of the game, the Eagles shot 43.5 percent (30-of-69) from the floor, including 40.6 percent (13-of-32) from the three-point line, to stay ahead and defeat the Bears for their third straight conference win of the season.
With the win, FGCU improves to an 8-7 overall record (3-2 A-Sun), while the Bears fall to 3-15 overall (0-5 A-Sun).
For the first time this season, each Eagle that got playing time scored, led by point guard Chelsea Dermyer (Fort Collins, Col.) with her 16 points and eight assists. For the game, Dermyer made 4-of-8 attempts from the field, 3-of-6 from long-distance and 5-of-6 from the charity stripe. She also had two rebounds and only one turnover.
Adrianne McNally (Howell, Mich.) tallied 14 points. McNally grabbed seven rebounds and dished out three assists, while knocking down 6-of 14 shots from the field.
Ashley Haegele (Imperial, Mo.) registered her first career double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Haegele’s 11 rebounds helped the Eagles win the rebounding battle 50-37. In 26 minutes of action, Haegele connected on 4-of-8 three-point attempts. She also registered two steals, one rebound and one block.
Delia De La Torre (Las Cruces, N.M) and Mandi Pierce (Altoona, Pa.) each finished with eight points. De La Torre added five rebounds and five assists, while Pierce tallied six rebounds and an assist.
Mercer was led by LaToya Jackson’s 17 points. Cristin Seymour added 11 points and six rebounds for the Bears.
The Eagles will be back in action when they hit the road to battle Gardner-Webb on Saturday, January 26 at 5:30 p.m. FGCU’s next home game will be Feb. 4 when they play host to Lipscomb in Alico Arena at 7 p.m.
