FORT MYERS, Fla. - Florida Gulf Coast University Head Women’s Basketball Coach Karl Smesko has announced the signings of two players, 5-9 guard Lindsey Newpher and 5-11 guard Kristine Herman.
Lindsey Newpher, originally from Depew, Okl., played the past two years at Kansas City Kansas Community College. After coming back from an injury earlier this season, Newpher averaged 11.2 points in her final 11 games. As a freshman, she averaged 10.7 points, 3.9 rebounds, and shot over 36% from the 3 point line.
“Lindsey is a team player who knows how important it is to do the little things,” said Smesko. “She has a tremendous work ethic and will do whatever it takes to be successful.”
Kristine Herman, from San Ramon, Calif., will come to FGCU after graduating from Granada High School in Livermore, Calif. As a senior, Herman averaged 18.6 points, 6.6 rebounds, 3 steals, 1.8 assists, 1.4 blocks, while shooting 35% from the 3 point line.
Smesko stated that: “Kristine (Herman) is a fast, athletic guard with good size. She is a good shooter who will fit in well in our program.”
Newpher and Herman are the seventh and eighth signees of the FGCU Women’s Basketball team for the 2007-08 season.
They will join early signees 6-1 forward Madeleine Doyle (Gobles, Mich.), 5-7 guard Shannon Murphy (Brighton, Mich.), and 5-11 forward Bri Zabel (Northfield, Minn.) as well as late signees 6-1 forward Patrice McKenzie (Dunedin, New Zealand), 6-1 forward Diana Jacklin (Berwyn, Ill.), and 5-4 guard Jackie Thiel (Plainview, Texas).
The Eagles will join the Atlantic Sun Conference and NCAA Division I next season. Last year, the Eagles went 34-1 and had an appearance in the NCAA Division II championship game.
