EDINBURG, Texas - Delia De La Torre recorded her second consecutive double-double as the FGCU women's basketball team defeated Cal St. Bakersfield 64-54 to win the National Independent Tournament. The Eagles also picked up an automatic bid to the WNIT when ETSU defeated Jacksonville in the A-Sun Championship Game on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, FGCU improves to 21-8 overall, while Bakersfield falls to 12-17 overall.

FGCU went up 17-16 with 7:12 left in the first half and never looked back, as they took down the Road Runners to pick up their 16th win in their last 17 games and win the National Independent Tournament. The Eagles struggled offensively for the second consecutive game, shooting only 38.8 percent (19-of-49) from the field and 30 percent (9-of-30) from behind the 3-point line, but once again used their agressiveness on the boards to outrebound Bakersfield 35-27 and pick up the win.

De La Torre (Las Cruces, N.M.) snagged 13 rebounds, which is a new career-high, to pick up her fourth double-double of the season and earn tourney MVP honors. Ashley Haegele (Imperial, Mo.) chipped in with 12 points and three rebounds. Chelsea Dermyer (Fort Collins, Col.) played another solid game at the point for the Eagles, finishing with 10 points, seven assists and five rebounds.

Bakersfield was led by Krista Arase's 20 points.

The Eagles now have to sit and wait to see where and when they will be playing in the WNIT. The WNIT field and bracket will be announced late Monday evening, March 17, 2008.
