FORT MYERS, Fla. – Chelsea Lyle’s first double-double of the year (22 points, 10 rebounds) and Adrianne McNally’s 18-point, 7-rebound effort led the Eagles to a 73-62 win over the Santa Clara Broncos on Wednesday afternoon at Alico Arena in front of 874 fans.

After a nine-day layoff following their loss in Tallahassee to nationally-ranked Florida State, the Eagles showed signs of rust early.  In the first three and a half minutes of the game, the Eagles missed all four of their shots and turned the ball over twice.  A lay-up from Shannon Murphy at the 16:23 mark was the first field goal for FGCU, ending a 9-1 Santa Clara run to start the game.  But the Eagles would turn things around quickly, as the shooters came to life at the same time the Broncos shooters went extremely cold.  Over a 11:15 span, FGCU went on a 30-3 run , earning a 17-point advantage at 33-15 with 4:41 to play in the first half.  The Eagles would go into halftime holding a 39-26 edge.  In the half, FGCU’s Chelsea Lyles recorded 12 points and 4 rebounds, and Adrianne McNally added 11 points and 5 rebounds.

In the second half, the Eagles came out and continued to put pressure on Santa Clara, extending the lead to as much as 20 with 16:23 to play.  The Broncos would not go away easily though, as they would score 11 consecutive points to pull within 9 at 63-54 with 5:20 to play.  From there, the Eagles matched the Broncos shot-for-shot, never allowing SCU any closer than 8 points for the remainder of the game.

For the Broncos (0-5), Lena Gipson recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds, and added a team-high 5 assists.  Elizabeth Doran led Santa Clara with 16 points and added 7 rebounds as well.

For FGCU (2-1) , Chelsea Lyles recorded her first double-double of the season with 22 points and 10 rebounds.  Adrianne McNally had a solid effort, adding 18 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists.  Shannon Murphy had a team-high 5 assists along with 8 points and 3 steals.

The Eagles will be traveling to Greensboro, North Carolina tomorrow to participate in the UNCG Marriot Classic this weekend.  FGCU will take on the host school, UNC Greensboro on Friday at 3:00 PM, and Winston Salem State on Saturday at 1:00 PM.
