FGCU Launches Record Number of 3's in Win Over Lipscomb
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Three Eagles scored in double figures for the sixth consecutive game and FGCU took a school-record 46 three-pointers as they extended their winning streak to five games by defeating the Bisons of Lipscomb University 67-47 at Allen Arena on Monday night.
With the win, FGCU improves their record to 9-3 overall (4-0 A-Sun) while the Bisons fall to 3-11 overall (1-3 A-Sun). The win also gave the Blue and Green their 19th consecutive conference victory, with their last A-Sun loss coming against ETSU on Jan. 8, 2009 (75-67).
FGCU opened the contest with a 7-0 run over the first 4:24 holding the Lady Bisons scoreless for the first five minutes of the game, but coming out of the first media timeout, Lipscomb used a 7-0 run of their own to tie the score at 14-14.
After trading buckets, the Eagles used a 7-2 run to take control with a 14-9 lead at 10:18 remaining. For the next 6:12 FGCU struggled to find offense, but three three-pointers by Shannon Murphy (Brighton, Mich.) and a three-pointer from Kelsey Jacobson (Barnesville, Minn.) over the final 4:06 gave the Eagles a 26-21 lead at the half.
In the first half, Murphy led the Eagles with 14 points on 4-of-6 shooting from behind the arc, as the Eagles shot 26.5-percent (9-of-34) from the field and 6-of-23 (26.1-percent) from long distance. FGCU’s 26.5-percent from the floor in the first half was a season-low, with the previous season-low coming against New Mexico on Nov. 15 when the Eagles shot 26.7-percent (8-of-30) through the first 20 minutes.
FGCU’s offense began to click in the second half as the Eagles shot 7-of-14 (50-percent) from the field and 5-of-11 (45.5-percent) from three-point range over the first 8:13 to take a 12 point lead (46-34). The Blue and Green would continue to fire three-pointers and eventually defeat Lipscomb by a final score of 67-47, and earn their fourth conference win of the season.
Shannon Murphy led all scorers with 15 points on 5-of-13 shooting, including 5-of-10 from behind the arc. Murphy also tallied four assists and grabbed three boards. Eglah Griffin (Fort Myers, Fla.) scored 12 points and grabbed five boards. Adrianne McNally (Howell, Mich.) registered 10 points, seven boards and three steals. Shavonne Bulter (New Orleans, La.) scored a career-high nine points on 3-of-3 shooting from the field off the FGCU bench. As a team the Eagles knocked down 13 three-pointers.
Jenna Bartsokas led the Lady Bisons with 12 points and three steals.
After shooting 26.5-percent from the field (9-of-34) and 26.1-percent (6-of-23) from behind the arc in the first half, FGCU shot just over 45-percent in the final 20 minutes of the game. For the contest, the Eagles shot 35.4 percent (23-of-65) from the floor, hitting 13-of-46 (28.3-percent) three-pointers, while holding Lipscomb to 32.7-percent (16-of-49) from the floor and 21.1-percent (4-of-19) from behind the arc.
The Eagles land back at home this Thursday, Jan. 7 when they play host to the Ospreys of North Florida, tip-off is set for 6:05 p.m. at FGCU’s Alico Arena.
