Eagles Defeat Lancers to Win Longwood Tourney
FARMVILLE, Va. – Adrianne McNally and Chelsea Lyles scored 23 points and 21 points, respectively, as Florida Gulf Coast University women’s basketball team defeated Longwood University, 74-71, in the championship game of the Longwood Tournament at Willett Hall.
The Eagles (24-6 overall) led 30-27 at the half after shooting 11-of-27 (40.7-percent) from the field and 4-of-14 (28.6-percent) from long range through the first 20 minutes. Longwood (9-20 overall) managed to shoot 34.5-percent (10-of-29) from the field and (0-of-2) from three-point range.
After starting the second half on a 15-5 run to take a 45-32 lead with 14:31 remaining, the Blue and Green never relinquished their lead and held off the Lancers to pick up the 74-71 win, although Longwood went on a 17-4 run over the final 3:21 of the game to lose by the final margin.
The Eagles shot 13-of-23 (56.5-percent) from the field in the game’s final 20 minutes while Longwood was held to only 11-of-29 (37.9-percent).
FGCU shot 48-percent (24-of-50) from the field and 9-of-25 (36-percent) from behind the arc for the contest, compared to Longwood’s 36.2-percent (21-of-58) from the floor and 33.3-percent (3-of-9) from long range. The Eagles also outrebounded the Lancers 41-35 for the game.
Senior forward Adrianne McNally (Howell, Mich.), who was named to the Longwood All-Tournament team, scored a team-high 23 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field and 10-of-14 from the charity stripe. McNally also recorded seven rebounds on the night. Senior forward Chelsea Lyles (Colorado Springs, Col.) finished with 21 points, seven rebounds, three assists, two blocks, and a pair of steals in 32 minutes of play, en route to being named Tournament MVP. Sophomore’s Courtney Chihil (Tipp City, Ohio) and Eglah Griffin (Fort Myers, Fla.) both chipped in with seven points and seven boards.
Crystal Smith led the Lancers with a game-high 28 points.
The Eagles now have to sit and wait to see who, where and when they will be playing in the first round of the WNIT. The Postseason WNIT field and bracket will be announced late Monday evening, March 15, via the WNIT website.
