FGCU Picks Up Three Votes in the USA Today/ESPN Top 25 Poll
FORT MYERS, Fla. - The FGCU women’s basketball team received three votes in this week's USA Today/ESPN Top 25 Coaches’ Poll that was released on Tuesday, Dec. 21.
This marks the second consecutive week and fifth time in program history that the Eagles have earned at least one vote in the USA Today/ESPN poll. FGCU earned one vote in last week’s poll (Dec. 14), received one vote in the 2009-10 AP Preseason Top 25 and also picked up a vote in back-to-back weeks in the AP Top 25 to close out the 2008-09 season.
In their last outing, the Eagles, led by five players in double figures and 16 three-pointers, remained unbeaten with an 86-71 win over FIU at Alico Arena on Dec. 15. Junior Kelsey Jacobson (Barnesville, Minn./Moorhead HS) finished with a season-high 20 points, four rebounds, four steals and three assists. Jacobson shot 7-of-8 from the field and 6-of-7 from three-point range. Senior Shannon Murphy (Brighton, Mich./Brighton HS) chipped in with 14 points, six assists and three steals. Junior Sarah Whitfield (Eugene, Ore./South Eugene HS/Lane CC) scored a career-high 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting, including 4-of-5 from long range. Juniors Courtney Chihil (Tipp City, Ohio/Alter HS) and Nicoya Jackson (Houston, Texas/Cypress Springs HS/Southwestern Christian) rounded out the double figure scorers with 10 each.
The Blue and Green (8-0) are back in action on Tuesday night (Dec. 21) as they play host to the Hoosiers of Indiana at 7:30 p.m. at Alico Arena in the back-end of a doubleheader after the men’s team hosts N.C.
