Women's Basketball Earns Votes in Top 25 Polls
Tuesday, December 28, 2010

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The FGCU women’s basketball team received four votes in this week's USA Today/ESPN Top 25 Coaches’ Poll and also picked up one vote in the AP Top 25 Poll that was released on Tuesday, Dec. 28.

This marks the first time in program history that the Eagles have earned votes in both polls in the same week. It is also the third consecutive week that the Eagles have earned at least one vote in the USA Today/ESPN poll. FGCU earned three votes in last week’s poll (Dec. 21).

The Blue and Green’s one vote in the AP Poll is the fourth time the program has received votes in the national poll. FGCU received one vote in the 2009-10 AP Preseason Top 25 and also picked up a vote in back-to-back weeks in the AP Top 25 to close out the 2008-09 season.

In their last outing, the Eagles, led by four players in double figures and 15 three-pointers, remained unbeaten with a 73-69 win over Big Ten foe Indiana at Alico Arena on Dec. 21 in front of 2,621 fans. Juniors Kelsey Jacobson (Barnesville, Minn./Moorhead HS) and Courtney Chihil (Tipp City, Ohio/ Alter HS) finished with 16 points and 14 points, respectively. Chihil, who was named A-Sun Player of the Week on Dec. 28, added 12 assists and nine rebounds in the win. Junior Eglah Griffin (Fort Myers, Fla./Dunbar HS/Seminole CC) registered a season-high 16 points and five boards in 32 minutes. Freshman Sarah Hansen (Edinboro, Pa./General McLane HS) pitched in with 11 points and four rebounds.

FGCU knocked down 44 percent (15-of-34) of its three-point attempts on the night. The Eagles have drained double digit three-pointers seven times on the season and now have 100 long distance makes as a team. Five different players made at least one trey for the Blue and Green, led by Griffin’s 4-of-7 night.

The Blue and Green (9-0, 2-0 A-Sun) will return to the court on Monday, Jan. 3 when they play host to Belmont in their A-Sun home opener. Tipoff at Alico Arena is set for 5:15 p.m.
