FORT MYERS, Fla. – FGCU junior guard Courtney Chihil has been named to the 2010-2011 Capital One Academic All-District 3 Women’s Basketball first team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Members of the College Sports Information Directors of America conduct nominations and voting for the All-America programs.
The District 3 team is made up of student-athletes from Division I schools in the states of Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. To be nominated, student-athletes must be at least a sophomore, a starter or important reserve, and must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.30 GPA or higher.
Chihil is now eligible to be selected as a member of the 2011 Capital One Academic All-America Team ballot, where first, second and third team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.
The Nursing major, who has a 3.86 grade-point average, has started every game this season. She leads the team in steals (2.3) and is the A-Sun’s leader in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.83), which ranks 42nd in the nation. The guard is coming off of her best collegiate performance where she scored a career-high and game-high 22 points as the Eagles defeated USC Upstate, 70-59, in Atlantic Sun action on Saturday (Feb. 5) at Alico Arena.
The Tipp City, Ohio native is joined on the Capital One Academic All-District 3 first team by Hampton’s Jericka Jenkins, Marissa Kastanek of NC State, Jasmine Thomas of Duke and Katie White of Coastal Carolina.
Chihil was one of only two Atlantic Sun players to receive district honors. Lipscomb’s Jenna Bartsokas was named to the All-District 4 first team.
The Blue and Green will return to the court on Monday, Feb. 7 when they host the Lady Bucs of ETSU (14-9 overall, 11-3 A-Sun) at Alico Arena for FGCU’s annual "Pink Zone" game, as well as the “Pack the House” and CSS/Atlantic Sun Game of the Week. Tip off is set for 7:06 p.m.
