FORT MYERS, Fla. – FGCU senior guard Courtney Chihil (Tipp City, Ohio/Alter HS) and redshirt-sophomore guard Sarah Hansen (McKean, Pa./General McLane HS) have been named to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-District 4 Women’s Basketball first team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Members of CoSIDA conduct nominations and voting for the All-America programs.
The District 4 team is made up of student-athletes from Division I schools in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Puerto Rico and South Carolina. To be nominated, student-athletes must be at least a sophomore, a starter or important reserve and must carry a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 or higher.
Chihil and Hansen are now eligible to be selected as members of the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America Team ballot, where first, second and third team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.
Chihil, a Nursing major who has a 3.86 cumulative GPA, has started 20 of 21 games this season. She leads the team in assists (3.0) and minutes (28.2) and is the A-Sun’s leader in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.8), which ranks 44th in the nation. The guard, a member of the 2011 Capital One Academic All-District 3 Women’s Basketball first team, is averaging 8.3 points and 4.1 rebounds this season.
Hansen, a Chemistry major who has a 3.95 cumulative GPA, has started every game this season. She leads the team in scoring (13.1), rebounding (6.1) and steals (2.2) and ranks in the Atlantic Sun Conference’s top 10 in scoring, steals and field goal percentage (.485). The McKean, Pa. native finished with 12 points, seven boards, five steals and three blocks to help the Green and Blue lock up the program’s first-ever spot in the A-Sun Tournament with a 58-51 win over Kennesaw State last week (Jan. 28).
Auburn’s Blanche Alverson, Paige Anderson of Samford, Jordan Jones of Florida and Cody Paulk of Georgia State join the FGCU duo on the Capital One Academic All-District 4 first team.
Chihil and Hansen are the only two Atlantic Sun women’s basketball players to receive district honors this season.
The Blue and Green (19-2, 11-0 A-Sun) will return to the court tonight (Feb. 2) when they take on the Ospreys of UNF (8-14 overall, 5-6 A-Sun) at UNF Arena. Tip off is set for 7:00 p.m. and can be seen live online at ASun.TV.
