FORT MYERS, Fla. – Fresh off of completing a conference sweep by taking the regular season with an A-Sun first-ever 18-0 record and finishing off their first-ever bid for the NCAA Tournament with a convincing 67-39 victory over second-seeded and 20-game winner Stetson in the postseason finale, the No. 26 FGCU women’s basketball team will hold a NCAA Selection Show Celebration party on Monday, March 12 beginning at 6:30 p.m. at Alico Arena. Fans are invited to join Coach Karl Smesko and the team at this free event as the Eagles find out their NCAA Tournament destination.

Generously sponsored by the FGCU Foundation, doors will open at 6 p.m. and the Selection Show will be broadcast live on ESPN at 7 p.m. The team will be introduced at 8 p.m. and Coach Smesko and a player(s) will make some remarks.

With their 21st consecutive win, the Eagles became just the second team to post an A-Sun undefeated regular season and win the Championship Title. Making their first A-Sun postseason appearance in their first year of postseason eligibility, FGCU became only the third team in A-Sun history to win the Atlantic Sun Championship in its first appearance. Stetson’s 39 points in the title game marked the 28th time the Eagles, who lead the conference in scoring defense (52.6 ppg), have held an opponent to 65 points or fewer this season and also the 18th occasion that FGCU has held an opponent to 55 points or fewer. SU’s 39 points are the fewest in the A-Sun Championship Final since 1991 (Miami 73, FAMU 44).

FGCU, who’s 29 wins are a program Division I record, own of the nation’s third longest winning streak (21) behind Baylor (31) and Stanford (25) and also have the fifth best winning percentage (.935) in Division I.

All first round games of the 2012 NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship are scheduled to be played Saturday-Sunday, March 17-18, with second round games held at the same locations on Monday-Tuesday, March 19-20. The second weekend Regionals will take Place in Des Moines, Iowa, Fresno, Calif., Raleigh, N.C. and Kingston, R.I.
