FORT MYERS, Fla. – Redshirt junior Sarah Hansen (McKean, Pa./General McLane HS) turned in a 24 point, 11 rebound performance, to lead the FGCU women's basketball team to a 69-45 win over in-state foe FIU on Wednesday night at Alico Arena.
The Eagles (2-0), who led the nation in three-point field goals per game (10.7) last season, knocked down 6-of-19 shots from long distance on the evening. Three different players made at least one trey for the Green and Blue, led by redshirt senior Lerrin Cook’s (Kearny, Ariz./Ray HS/Yavapai College) 4-of-8 night.
FGCU is now 152-10 all-time at Alico Arena, and are 44-12 all-time in the month of November. The Eagles also improve their record against Sun Belt competition to 6-0 (4-0 vs. FIU), with the average margin of victory being 14.3 points.
Hansen finished with 24 points on 10-of-16 shooting from the field in 35 minutes. The McKean, Pa. native also added 11 rebounds and two steals. Reigning A-Sun Preseason Defensive Player of the Year Brittany Kennedy (Spokane, Wash./Lewis and Clark HS/Oregon State) recorded 16 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals. Kennedy also held Jerica Coley, a 2012 Associated Press All-America Honorable Mention and the 2012 Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year that averaged 23.4 points per game, to just nine points on 4-of-12 shooting. Cook finished with 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the floor, including draining a game-high four triples. Cook has hit four treys in both of FGCU’s games this season.
In the first half, the Eagles took an early lead but FIU (1-1) bounced back to go ahead, 16-15, at the 8:11 mark. The Eagles would then go on a 20-5 run to close out the half, highlighted by eight points from Hansen, taking a 35-21 advantage into the intermission.
The second half saw FIU start to chip away at the deficit before FGCU used a 14-0 run over a span of nearly five minutes to push its lead to 62-37 with just under six minutes left to play. The Green and Blue’s lead proved to be too much for the Panthers to overcome, as the Eagles went on for a 69-45 win.
As a team, FIU was held to 32.2 percent (19-of-59) from the field compared to a 44.3 percent (27-of-61) mark for FGCU. The Eagles outscored FIU, 42-28, in the paint and also won the rebound battle, 40-39.
The Eagles will now hit the road to take on the 49ers of Charlotte on Saturday, Nov. 17. Tipoff for the first matchup between the two teams is set for 5 p.m.
