FORT MYERS, Fla. – Three players scored in double figures as the FGCU women’s basketball team knocked down 11 three-pointers and forced 21 turnovers en route to a 67-37 Atlantic Sun Conference victory over Lipscomb on Monday night at Alico Arena. The Bisons’ 37 points mark the third time this season that the Eagles have held an opponent below 40 points.
“We struggled a bit against their zone defense in the first half,” said head coach Karl Smesko. “In the second half we made a few adjustments and were able to go out and execute. Finally getting some outside shots to fall for us helped a lot with breaking down Lipscomb’s zone.”
With the win, FGCU, winners of 26 straight A-Sun games, improves to 15-5 overall and 8-0 in the A-Sun, while Lipscomb falls to 2-15 overall (1-6 A-Sun). FGCU’s 26 consecutive conference victories ranks as the second longest streak in the country behind defending national champion Baylor (28).
The Eagles, who have made at least one three-pointer in 217 consecutive contests and 329 of 330 games in program history, made 11 triples on the night and now have 182 three-pointers as a team. Five different players made at least one trey for the Green and Blue, who rank third in the nation in three-pointers made per game (9.0), led by senior Joyce Iamstrong’s (Chicago, Ill./Thornton Fractional South HS/Jefferson College) 4-of-10 night.
Iamstrong turned in 12 points, six rebounds and two assists in 23 minutes. Redshirt junior Sarah Hansen (McKean, Pa./General McLane HS) registered 11 points, nine boards and four helpers, while freshman Katie Meador (Salem, Ill./Salem Community HS) totaled 10 points, four boards, three steals in 15 minutes.
The Eagles opened the game with a quick 5-0 run, thanks to a Jaime Gluesing (Solon, Ohio/Solon HS) three-pointer and a Brittany Kennedy (Spokane, Wash./Lewis and Clark HS/Oregon State) layup. Lipscomb responded with a 5-0 spurt to tie the game at 5-5 with 15:16 left in the opening period.
The Green and Blue went on to score 11 unanswered points, capped by DyTiesha Dunson’s (Albany, Ga./Westover HS) old fashioned three-point play, to go ahead 16-5 at the 10:50 mark. Over the next 10 minutes, LU outscored FGCU 13-8 to pull within six-points (24-18), until Kennedy took an outlet pass from Hansen and went coast-to-coast for a layup as time expired to give the Green and Blue a 26-18 lead going into the locker room at halftime.
Kennedy and Betsy Adams (Monticello, Ind./Twin Lakes HS/Valpo) led FGCU with six points each in the first half, while Hansen added five points and seven rebounds. FGCU struggled from the floor in the opening period, shooting 24.3 percent (9-for-37) from the field and 4-of-28 from long distance. The Bisons, who were forced into 14 first half turnovers, hit 8-of-24 shots from the floor (33.3 percent).
After knocking down just 4-of-28 shots from long range in the first half, FGCU showed why they rank third in the nation in made triples made per game. The Eagles connected on trifectas in the second half.
The Green and Blue used a 36-11 run over the first 10:47 of the second period to grab a 62-29 lead and end any hope of a Lipscomb upset bud.
The Bisons were held to 30 percent (15-for-50) from the floor and 13.6 percent (3-for-22) from long range.
The Eagles shot 33.3 percent (25-for-75) from the floor and hit 11 three-pointers on 50 attempts (22 percent). FGCU also registered 49 rebounds to win the rebound battle (49-40), forced Lipscomb into 21 turnovers and tallied 19 assists on 25 made baskets.
The Green and Blue are back in action on Saturday, January 26 when they host the Hatters of Stetson (15-4, 8-0 A-Sun) in a ‘Battle of the A-Sun Unbeatens’ at Alico Arena. Tipoff is set for 7:05 p.m.
