FORT MYERS, Fla. – FGCU Women’s Basketball Director of Basketball Operations, Mel Thomas, was inducted into her high school’s (Mount Notre Dame) Hall of Fame on Thursday, April 18 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Thomas, the all-time leading scorer in the history of Mount Notre Dame’s basketball program, and the 2004 MND state championship team were recognized at the event.
A three-time BIG EAST Academic All-Star at UConn, Thomas was co-captain of the 2004 MND team that finished the season with a perfect 28-0 record and the Division 1 State Championship. Mount Notre Dame was listed as the best team in the nation in by one outlet and national runner-up in two others.
Individually, Thomas, Mount Notre Dame’s all-time leading scorer with 2,037 points, was named Miss Ohio Basketball as the state’s top female player, Co-player of the Year and first team All-State by the Associated Press, Grange Insurance Most Valuable Player of the 2004 State Championship game, McDonald’s All American, Player of the Year for the Girls’ Greater Cincinnati League (GGCL) and the Cincinnati Enquirer and second team All-America by Parade magazine.
This season, Thomas and the FGCU staff, led by four-time Atlantic Sun Coach of the Year Karl Smesko, guided the Eagles to the ninth-straight 21+ win in program history and their sixth consecutive Division I postseason tournament (WNIT). The Green and Blue, the first school to go undefeated in A-Sun play in back-to-back seasons, finished the season with the most victories (27) of the 13 Division I institutions in the state of Florida and captured the program’s third consecutive A-Sun Regular Season crown (fourth in the last five years).
