MACON, Ga. – The FGCU men’s and women’s cross country teams have both been picked fifth in the 2014 Atlantic Sun Conference Preseason Poll released Wednesday. Voted on by the league coaches, Lipscomb University enters as the preseason conference favorite, with its women’s program receiving all eight first-place votes and its men’s team earning seven.

The FGCU women head into the 2014 season with a 10-member squad, including six veterans and four newcomers, while the men’s roster lists three freshmen and 11 returners, including 2013 Second Team All-Conference member Austin Boetje (Lawrenceville, Ga./Mill Creek HS/Georgia State).

An ever-improving program, the Eagles posted 36 personal records during the previous season, in addition to resetting each of the four program records, claiming big wins over Atlantic Coast and Southeastern Conference members, receiving six conference honors and earning the program’s first Atlantic Sun Runner of the Year title in former student-athlete Kelly Perzanowski.

FGCU begins its 2014 season at the Stetson Invitational in DeBary, Fla. on Saturday, Aug. 30. After competing in DeBary, the Eagles go on to compete in four other meets, including a trip to Gainesville to run in the UF Mountain Dew Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 20.

Lipscomb is looking to win its fourth consecutive championship behind Preseason Runner of the Year Sally Larson, who placed fourth in the 2013 A-Sun Championships. North Florida snatched the second-place spot, receiving 56 points from the league coaches. The Ospreys have finished in the top-three at the A-Sun Championships in each of the past four years.

The heavily-favorited Lipscomb men will look to claim their second-straight championship, but Preseason Runner of the Year and reining A-Sun Champion J.J. Webber will aim to lead 2014 preseason and 2013 A-Sun runner-up Northern Kentucky to an upset.

This year’s A-Sun Championships will be hosted by Stetson in Deland, Fla., on Saturday, Nov. 1. After the FGCU men took fourth place and the women took eighth in the 2013 championship, the Eagles will look to keep improving in 2014.
