FORT MYERS, Fla. – After earning their fourth-straight Atlantic Sun Regular Season title, the FGCU women’s basketball team captured the program’s second Atlantic Sun Conference Championship with a 72-70 overtime victory over Stetson on Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Eagles earn the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The team will learn their seed, opponent and game information Monday night in a live Selection Show and all fans are invited to attend.
The doors will open at 6 p.m. with a program scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. The program will begin with a drawing that includes a trip for the two to the 2014 Final Four. The drawing also includes an iPad mini, a two-night stay the Hyatt Regency Coconut Point Resort & Spa, a 2014-15 FGCU Basketball Season Ticket Package and a 2014-15 Season Ticket Package that includes general admission tickets for softball, baseball, men’s soccer, women’s soccer & volleyball and four general admission tickets to two men’s or women’s basketball games.
Following the drawing, Director of Athletics Ken Kavanagh and University President Dr. Wilson G. Bradshaw will address the team and fans in attendance.
The official Selection Show will be broadcast live on ESPN at 7 p.m. and will feature live action shots from inside Alico Arena.
Following the Selection Show, head coach Karl Smesko and senior captain Sarah Hansen will speak to the crowd.
All first round games of the 2014 NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship are scheduled to be played Saturday-Sunday, March 22-23 at regional sites around the country.
The second round will be played at the same locations Monday and Tuesday, March 24-25 with the Regional rounds scheduled for March 29-30 and March 31-April 1 in four locations – Lincoln, Neb., Notre Dame, Ind., Louisville, Ky. and Stanford, Calif.
The Women’s Final Four will be held in the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tenn. April 6 and 8.
The FGCU women will play in the NCAA Tournament for the second time in three years after earning a no. 12 seed in 2013. The Eagles fell in overtime to no. 5 St. Bonaventure in Tallahassee and are projected to a similar seed in this year’s tournament.
The team currently holds an official NCAA RPI rating of 60 after finishing the regular season with a record of 23-7 and moving to 26-7 with three wins in the Atlantic Sun Championship.
