Memphis, TN – Sophomore Katy Steffan became the first female athlete from Florida Gulf Coast University to compete in an NCAA championship when she ran in the NCAA Division II South Region women’s 6-K cross country championship on Saturday, November 6 in Memphis, Tennessee.

Steffan, from Naples Barron Collier, capped off a successful season with a personal-best time of 25:02 in the 6-K. A transfer from Eckerd College, where she ran in the South Region meet a year ago, Steffan set the school record in the 5-K earlier this season.

The distance of the women’s race was increased to 6-K for the NCAA meets from the normal 5-K races conducted in the regular season.

“Katy wanted to beat her regional time from a year ago and accomplished her goal,” said Eagles head coach Chris Highfield. “With this experience, we think that Katy will continue to accomplish great things in her career here.”

The University of Tampa captured the women’s team title while Hellen Singoei of Harding was the individual winner. The top four teams and top two individuals qualified for the NCAA Division Championship meet in Indianapolis.
