Five Eagles set PR's at Pre-Regional Cross Country Meet

DADE CITY, Fla.  – Five members of the Florida Gulf Coast University women’s cross country team took advantage of the rolling hills of the Little Everglades Ranch in Dade City to set personal career-bests in the flrunners.com Cross Country Invitational VI on Friday night.

Seven total runners set season-bests over the 5-K course that will serve as the site of the NCAA Division II South Region Championships in November. The Eagles placed ninth among the mix of 17 teams from NCAA Division I, II and NAIA schools competing. Florida State won the team title while junior Jael Koech of Florida Southern (17:41) won the race by more than 34 seconds over second place finisher Janet Cepkonga of Columbus State.

Sophomore Cadie Sly posted the fourth best 5-K time in school history, finishing 29th in 20:16. Freshman April Ward was 49th in a career-best 21:12. Freshman Lyndsey Kelly ran third for the Eagles, placing 70th in a career-best 21:52. Freshman Marie Scarpantonio ran a career-best 21:58 to place 75th.

Junior Lindsey Garven ran a season-best 21:59 while freshman Cindy Watson had a career-best 22:04. Junior Katy Steffan, junior Lindsay Gualario, and senior Antoinette Savino also competed for FGCU.

The Eagles will compete in the 10th Annual Walt Disney World Cross Country Classic on Saturday, October 8 at 8:55 a.m.
