Women Finish in 16th at Sean Earl Invitational
Cohen paces Eagles once again to match school record
CHICAGO – Sophomore Barrie Cohen (Vorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) matched the school record to lead the FGCU women’s cross country team to a 16th place finish in the 41-team field at the 38th annual the Sean Earl Lakefront Invitational on Montrose Beach on Saturday afternoon. Northwestern took home the crown in the 5K race.
“The women competed really well. I think that they weren’t used to the weather conditions but they didn’t worry about what they couldn’t control,” said head coach Cassandra Harbin. “They just tried to have fun and compete at the highest level they can.”
Cohen once again paced the Eagles, clocking in at 18:42 for a 34th-place finish out of 512 runners. Her time matches her own school record set at the Mt. Dew Invitational (Sept. 18).
Freshman Kelly Perzanowski (St. Clairsville, Ohio/St. Clairsville) was right behind Cohen for the second meet in a row, crossing the line at 18:44 to place 37th. Her time is now second all-time in the school record book as she beat her own time (18:49.06) from the Mt. Dew Invitational.
Running in her first meet of the season, sophomore Shannon Compher (Oviedo, Fla./Hagerty HS) finished in 77th with a time of 19:11. Compher’s time is just two seconds behind what she paced at the 2009 Atlantic Sun Championship and stands in a tie for the seventh fastest time in school history.
Compher’s classmate Claire Stodghill (Tallahassee, Fla./Leon) (19:50) and senior Megan Thies (Brandon, Fla./Brandon) (20:01) rounded out the Eagles’ top finishers.
The team will spend the rest of October preparing for the Atlantic Sun Championship on October 30 in Spartanburg, S.C. with tune-up meets at the Disney Invitational (Oct. 9) and Hatter Invitational (Oct. 15).
