Eagles Slotted Sixth in A-Sun Women's Cross Country Poll
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU women’s cross country team, which finished in a program-best sixth place at the 2010 Atlantic Sun Conference Championship, was predicted to repeat that finish in the 2011 preseason poll, as voted on by league coaches and announced by the conference office on Wednesday.
With seven returners from a season ago, the Eagles are led by junior Barrie Cohen (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) who finished 15th with a school record time of 18:13.62 at the A-Sun Championship. Missing a spot on the All-Conference team by one place, Cohen improved her fastest time by 15 seconds and now owns four times on the program’s top time list.
FGCU finished in the top 10 in six of their seven meets last season, highlighted by a second place finish at the season opening King of the Hill Elite Invitational hosted by Miami.
North Florida was voted first overall in the preseason tally. The Ospreys, who won the 2010 A-Sun Championship by 18 points with four finishers in the top-14, received first-place votes from eight of the league coaches.
Lipscomb landed in the second spot with two-first place votes following a program-best third-place finish in 2010. The Lady Bisons placed three on the all-conference team last season. Jacksonville, Belmont and USC Upstate rounded out the remaining top-five.
The Eagles are set to open the 2011 campaign by hosting the FGCU Invitational. The Invite is set for Friday, September 2, beginning at 6 p.m. at Buckingham Park in Fort Myers, Fla.
