Women's Cross Country Places Second at Season-Opening FGCU Invite
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Opening the 2011 season by hosting the second home event in program history, the FGCU women’s cross country team finished in second place overall at the FGCU Invitational at Buckingham Property on Friday evening. Junior Barrie Cohen (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional HS) and sophomore Kelly Perzanowski (St. Clairsville, Ohio/St. Clairsville HS) led the Eagles with fourth and fifth place finishes in the 5 km race.
“I was happy to see the team open the season with a strong outing,” said fourth-year head coach Cassandra Harbin. “They have been working very hard in practice and I feel that today’s result was a good way to begin the season.”
The Eagles finished in second place with team score of 51, trailing Miami’s total of 29. FIU finished just behind the Green and Blue with 53 points and FAU placed fourth with 88 points.
Cohen placed fourth overall with a time of 19:36.50, while Perzanoski recorded a time of 19:45.80 to take fifth place in the field of 31.
Sophomore Caity Hoffman (Garnerville, N.Y./Albertus Mangus) crossed the finish at the 20:48.90 to position herself 11th overall. Finishing shortly after, classmate Marjorie Docus (Orlando, Fla./Winter Park) posted a time 21:12.50, good for 14th place.
Also competing for the Green and Blue, freshman Alicen Wilbur (Saint James City, Fla./Ida S. Baker HS) registered a time of 21:34.30 and senior Taylor Cook (Homosassa, Fla./Lecanto HS) crossed at the 21:42.00 mark. Rounding out the Eagles’ runners, redshirt sophomore Alyssa Sawyer (Key West, Fla./Key West HS) and freshman Alexander Petrizzo (Fort Myers, Fla./Cypress Lake HS) finished with times of 22:10.00 and 26:50.60, respectively.
The Eagles now prepare for a trip to Nashville, Tenn. to compete at the Commodore Classic hosted by Vanderbilt on Saturday, September 17 beginning at 9 a.m. The Classic will provide an opportunity for the Green and Blue to preview the course which will host the 2011 Atlantic Sun Conference championship in late October.
