FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University cross country teams are set to compete at the Disney World Cross Country Classic at the Wide World of Sports Complex on Saturday morning in Orlando, Fla. The men’s 8K event will commence at 7:45 a.m. followed by the women’s 5K race at 8:30 a.m.

The Eagles will compete in the 30-team men’s field and 35-team women’s field which includes FAU, UCF, Tampa, Drake, FAMU and the Citadel.

Saturday will mark the ninth time the Green and Blue will have competed at the event. Both teams earned their best finish at the event last season, where the men took 10th of 21 and the women placed 7th out of 24 schools. Men’s sophomore Argeo Cruz (Immokalee, Fla./Immokalee HS) finished in 17th place out of 186 runners with a time of 25:43.10, breaking his previous school record of 26:06 set last season. Taking 17th out of 219 runners with a time of 18:28.10, women’s junior Barrie Cohen (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional HS) also set a new school record, besting her previous record time of 18:42.

FGCU returns to the course after last competing at the 23rd Annual UF Mountain Dew Invitational. The men’s team took 7th out of 18 schools, while the women finished 9th of 19 at the event.

The men’s team is led by Cruz and redshirt sophomore Gilbert Chemaoi (Eldoret, Kenya/Kirobon HS/Eastern Kentucky). Cruz has been the top finisher in two of the three races this season, including a first place finish at the season opening FGCU Invitational. Chemaoi has also been a solid contributor to the team scoring, leading the Eagles with a 22nd place finish in the field of 190 runners at the Commodore Classic.

Cohen and sophomore Kelly Perzanowski (St. Clairsville, Ohio/St. Clairsville HS) have finished one-two for the Green and Blue in all three events this fall. Both of their top finishes came at the season-opening FGCU Invite where Cohen finished just ahead of Perzanowski, placing fourth and fifth overall, respectively, while helping the Eagles to a second place finish.

Results and recaps from both the men’s and women’s competition will be available at www.FGCUAthletics.com following the event.
