Klaves Named FGCU Men’s & Women’s Cross Country Assistant
FORT MYERS, Fla. – FGCU men’s and women’s cross country head coach Cassandra Goodson announced on Friday that Jeff Klaves will join the coaching staff as an assistant coach.
Klaves spent the 2011-12 season at fellow Atlantic Sun member ETSU, serving as a graduate assistant coach for the cross country programs and track & field programs.
“Jeff is a guy that has a deep passion for the sport,” said Goodson. “He has an outstanding relationship with distance runners and knows how to relate to them. He also brings a great element of organization and energy to our program and I’m excited to have him here.”
“I look forward for the opportunity to work alongside coach Goodson while representing Florida Gulf Coast University,” Klaves said. “Coach Goodson has done an excellent job building the program with talented student-athletes and I can’t wait to help continue what she has started. FGCU has a name locally and I believe the program has the facilities and resources to aspire for the same recognition nationally.”
At ETSU, Klaves helped the Bucs’ men’s cross country team finish fifth at the 2011 A-Sun Championships, while three different runners were lauded with postseason honors, highlighted by Filip Jalovy being named the A-Sun Freshman of the Year.
Klaves guided the men’s distance team to a 2012 A-Sun outdoor track and field title, in addition to three distance athletes earning medals in the process. The Bucs had six total All-A-Sun performers at the championships (three indoor & three outdoor). He coached an NCAA outdoor track and field regional qualifier in the 800 meters on the women’s side.
While coaching the women’s distance team, the women’s track and field teams scored the most points in program history at the indoor and outdoor championships that had two All-A-Sun performers (one indoor/ one outdoor).
A four-year letterwinner in track & field at former A-Sun member Campbell, Klaves spent the 2010-11 season starting the men’s and women’s track programs at Hobbton High School in Newton Grove, N.C. During the inaugural season, Klaves led Hobbton to the state championships, while producing their first top-4 finish in the 200 meters.
At Campbell, Klaves was an NCAA Academic All-American and a two-time All-Atlantic Sun performer in track and field. He ranks in Campbell’s top 10 all-time fastest times in the 800 meters, mile and 3000 meters.
