Cross Country Sets Sights on NCAA South Regional

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU men’s and women’s cross country teams prepares to compete at the 2012 NCAA South Regional Friday in Tallahassee, Fla. hosted by Florida State. The women’s 6K will begin at 8:30 a.m. followed by the men’s 10K at 9:15 a.m.

The men’s cross country team is currently ranked No. 14 for the second-straight week in the latest U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) South Region rankings.

This will be the second time in program history both teams will compete in the NCAA South Regional. The men’s team sent then-sophomores Gilbert Chemaoi (Eldoret, Kenya/Kirobon HS/Eastern Kentucky) and Argeo Cruz (Immokalee, Fla./Immokalee HS) to last year’s race. Chemaoi finished 55th with a time of 33:01.7 followed by Cruz in 83rd place with a time of 33:34.3. The men’s team will send seven student-athletes to this year’s event.

On the women’s side only junior Kelly Perzanowski (St. Clairsville, Ohio/St. Clairsville HS) and senior Barrie Cohen (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern Regional HS) will compete for FGCU for the second-straight year. At last year event, Cohen finished 61st with a time of 22:14.30 and Perzanowski finished 150th with a time of 24:06.40.

33 teams will compete on the men’s side while 39 will compete in the women’s race. 11 teams from Florida are scheduled to run at this year’s regional.

At the 2012 Atlantic Sun Conference Championship, the men’s team finished a program-best fourth while the women’s team finished seventh. In the men’s event, the Eagles had three student-athletes finish within the top 20, highlighted by junior Chris Rudloff’s (Ormond Beach, Fla./Mainland) who was named to the All-Conference second-team with his 14th place finish (25:28.9). Rudloff was named to the All-Conference second-team for his performance. Classmate Cruz finished 16th with a time of 25:44.1 followed by senior Alexander Schilling (Dresden, Germany/Sportsgymnasium Dresden/Queens University of Charlotte) who finished 20th with a time of 25:58.1.
