Women's Cross Country Predicted To Finish Seventh In #ASunXC Preseason Poll
MACON, Ga. – The FGCU women’s cross country team has been picked seventh in the 2013 Atlantic Sun Conference Preseason Poll released Thursday. Voted on by the league coaches, Lipscomb University received all 10 first-place votes and enters as the preseason conference favorite.
The Bisons are looking to win three consecutive championships behind Preseason Runner of the Year Dani Walker, who placed third in the 2012 A-Sun Championships. North Florida snatched the second-place spot, receiving 86 points from the league coaches. The Ospreys have finished in the top-two at the A-Sun Championships in each of the past three years.
The Eagles head into the 2013 season with six returners, including Kelly Perzanowski (St. Clairsville, Ohio/St. Clairsville HS), who broke the school record for the 6K last year with a time of 22:02.6.
An ever-improving program, the women’s squad posted 16 personal records during the spring season in which they competed in five meets as part of a track and field ledger. During the regular fall season, FGCU finished second in its home event to open last year, and also took third out of 27 at the Disney World Classic (Oct. 6) and fifth at the UCF Black and Gold Challenge (Oct. 12).
Beyond running, the squad earned a team GPA of 3.31 for the spring semester in 2013, and posted a cumulative GPA of 3.29 for the 2012-13 academic year.
FGCU begins its 2013 season at the Westminster Academy Invite in Lauderdale Lakes on Saturday, Aug. 31, at 5:30 p.m. After competing at Lauderdale Lakes, the Eagles go on to compete in five other meets, including a trip to Gainesville to run in the UF Mountain Dew Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 14 at 8 a.m.
