Paced by sophomore Katy Steffan, the Florida Gulf Coast University women’s cross country team finished in 19th place overall with 499 points in a strong field at the Gator Invitational held at the Canterbury Equestrian Showplace in Newberry, Fla. Saturday morning.

Led by individual winner Jill Steffens, the University of Georgia captured the team title with 29 points to easily outdistance runner-up Florida and third-place South Florida.

"I was pleased with the way our teams raced today,” said Chris Highfield. “This was a large race and it was great for getting our young runners some much needed experience at this level.”

Steffan (Naples/Barron Collier) finished 73rd overall with a time of 20:26 over the 5-K course. Her finish was the fourth fastest in school history. Last year’s top runner, Carolyn Johnstone holds the top-three finishes for an Eagles runner.

Finishing behind Steffan for the Eagles were freshman Laura Salinas of Naples/Lely (117th) in 21:36.80; freshman Nichole Grothaus of Naples/St. John Neumann (140th) in 22:26.02; sophomore Lindsey Garven (165th) in 23:54.30; Antoinette Savino (177th) in 26:03.23 and Erika Long of Naples Barron Collier (180th) in 26:25.10.

Florida Gulf Coast University’s next meet will be September 24 at the flrunners.com Invitational V at Ed Radice Park in Tampa.
