Women's Cross Country Finishes 7th at Embry-Riddle Classic

FORT MYERS, FL  – Sophomore Katy Steffan (Naples/Barron Collier) posted the highest finish ever by a Florida Gulf Coast University cross country runner with a fourth-place finish to lead the Eagles to seventh place in a 10-team field at the Embry-Riddle / Smoothie King 5-K Classic on Saturday, October 2.

Steffan, who has three top-10 finishes in four races this fall, completed the hilly course in 21:16. Her fourth-place finish is the highest individual performance by either a men's or women's runner at FGCU.

Freshman Laura Salinas (Naples/Lely) continued her strong showing in the second spot for the Eagles with a 16th place finish with a time of 22:41. Senior Jamie Knapp (Englewood/Lemon Bay), running in just her second race, was third for FGCU and 38th overall in 24:30. Freshman Nichole Grothaus (Naples/St. John Neumann) finished 40th in 24:44.

Sophomore Lindsey Garven (Oviedo) finished 46th in 25:40 while classmate Erika Long (Naples/Barron Collier) completed the course in 29:19, good for 60th.

FGCU finished seventh overall with 144 points. Florida Tech captured the team title with 59 points.

The Eagles run at the Walt Disney World Invitational on October 9.
