Women's Cross Country Closes Regular Season at Stetson
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University women’s cross country team closes out the regular season when they compete in the 16th Annual Hatter Cross Country Invitational at Stetson University on Friday night. The 12-team 5K event begins at 4:30 p.m.
Strong weekly progression for his young team have head coach Chris Highfield feeling optimistic about his team’s effort heading into the final meet before the NCAA Division II South Region Championship Meet at the Little Everglades Ranch in Dade City, Fla.
“We ran very well last week at the Disney Classic,” said Highfield. “We are looking to finish the regular season on a positive note heading into the regional meet. Everyone is finally healthy and that should help us continue to improve.”
Highfield’s team, which features seven runners in their first season of college cross country, has been bolstered by strong performances by three of its veterans.
Junior Katy Steffan (Naples, Fla.) overcame a season-long battle with anemia to post her season-best time of 20:55 despite running with just one shoe at last week’s Disney Classic. Sophomore transfer Cadie Sly (Loxahatchee, Fla.), who was the top runner at Stetson last fall, has posted two of the top six times in school history this year. Junior Lindsey Garven (Oviedo, Fla.) has posted back-to-back career personal bests in the past two races.
“These three ladies have done a great job for us,” said Highfield. “Katy is just now getting into top form and Cadie is going to be ready for her homecoming at Stetson. And Lindsey has always run well on this course and stepped us as a team leader for us. We expect them to continue their strong performances.
FGCU finished 10th in the event a year ago.
