FORT MYERS, Fla. – FGCU cross country head coach Cassandra Harbin announced the addition of four freshmen runners to the women’s team for the 2010 season.
Majorie Ducos, Caitlyn Hoffman, Gretchen MacMillan, and Kelly Perzanowski will join seven returners on an Eagle club that was predicted to finish seventh in the Atlantic Sun.
"I'm excited about this class because they are a tremendous fit for our program, not just athletically, but academically and socially,” said Harbin. “Some of these young women are going to have a chance to be competitive right away. We will also be returning four of our top five runners from last year. Last year's team surprised us all by beating Miami in the first meet of the season for the first Division I win for any FGCU Cross Country team."
An All-Metro Conference team selection, Ducos has a personal-best of 18:55 in a 5K race. The Orlando, Fla., native was also named to the All-Central Florida team and ran a 5:20 in the 1600 meter for a career-best. Ducos garnered All-District and All-Region honors before finishing sixth with a personal-best of 18:51.31 in the 5000m at FHSAA CC State Finals to earn All-State accolades.
Hoffman earned MVP of the track team at Albertus Magnus and posted a record-time of 5:30 in the 1600m, as well as an 11:10 in the 3200m. The Garnerville, N.Y., native took second at the Class C Section 1 race and was part of a team that won the league championship.
A cross country and track athlete at West Port, MacMillan was named to the All-County, All-Conference and All-District teams in both cross country and track. She also earned All-Region and All-State recognition while earning the district title in cross country and in the 3200m race in 11th grade. The Ocala, Fla., native ran a personal-best 19:07 in the 5K. MacMillan, who plans to major in biology, graduated at the top of her class and earned a spot on the FHSAA All-Academic Team and was the Florida Dairy Farmers 2010 Scholar Athlete of the Year.
Perzanowski was part of a four-time All-Division Championship cross country squad at St. Clairsville. After being named District Runner of the Year, she led her team to a runner-up finish at the State Championship where she finished eighth. Her top time in the 1600m was a 5:05, while the Ohio native set a personal-best time in the 5K, clocking in at 18:36. To close out her high school career, Perzanowski took division titles in the 1600m and 3200m in the 2010 track season.
