NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Florida Gulf Coast University women’s cross country team competed in its second meet of the fall season at the Commodore Classic hosted by Vanderbilt on Saturday morning. Competing on the Vaughn’s Gap Course which will host the 2011 Atlantic Sun Conference Championship, the Eagles finished in 9th place in the field of 23, led by junior Barrie Cohen (Voorhees, N.J. Eastern Regional HS), who finished 36th in the 5km event.
On Saturday, FGCU claimed a pair of runners in the top 50, while four athletes placed in the top 100 in the field of 194, for a team score of 293. With seven runners in the top 25, Alabama was crowned with the victory after finishing with a total of 45 points at the event.
Leading the way for the Eagles was Cohen, who took 36th with a time of 19:04.40. It marks the second consecutive meet in which Cohen has led the Green and Blue, after finished fourth overall and leading FGCU to a second place finish at the season-opening FGCU Invitational.
Also in the top 50 for the Green and Blue was sophomore Kelly Perzanowski (St. Clairsville, Ohio St./Clairsville HS), who finished in 44th place with a time of 19:17.10. Sophomores Marjorie Ducos (Orlando, Fla./Winter Park HS) and Caity Hoffman (Garnerville, N.Y./Albertus Mangus HS) also cracked the top 100, with times of 19:58.60 (69th) and 20:18.90 (86th), respectively.
Rounding out the Eagles’ scoring were sophomore Gretchen MacMillan (Ocala, Fla./West Port HS), freshman Alicen Wilbur (Saint James City, Fla./Ida S. Baker HS) and senior Taylor Cooke (Homosassa, Fla. Lecanto HS). MacMillan finished with a time of 21:02.90 to place 121st, while Wilbur and Cooke came across the line nearly back-to-back with times of 21:35.80 (133rd) and 21:43.20 (135th).
The Eagles will now prepare for the UF Mountain Dew Invitational next Saturday in Gainesville beginning at 8 a.m. Results and recaps from the weekend competition will be available at www.FGCUAthletics.com at the conclusion of the event.
