GAINESVILLE, Fla. – On Saturday morning, the FGCU women’s cross country finished in 9th place in the field of 19-teams at the 23rd Annual UF Mountain Dew Invitational. Junior Barrie Cohen (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional HS) led the Eagles, placing 32nd overall.
“I feel that we were capable of doing a little better today,” said fourth-year head coach Cassandra Harbin. “Understanding the hard week of training we had though, I am ok with the results from this morning. We left a couple runners at home which probably could have improved our score, but all things considered I am pleased with today’s effort.”
With six runners in the top 100, including a pair in the top 40, the Eagles finished in 9th place with 263 points, ahead of UCF (268) and FIU (276). No. 25 Florida took first place at the event with 30 points, while No. 15 North Carolina came in second with 35.
For the third straight time this season, Cohen led the Green and Blue in the 5k event. The Voorhees, N.J. product took 32nd in the field of 208, with a time of 19:02.63.
Sophomore Kelly Perzanowski (St. Clairsville, Ohio/St. Clairsville HS) has also been strong for the Eagles, with the second-best time for the Eagles in all three fall events. Perzanowski crossed the finish line at the 19:18.19 mark, to finish 38th individually.
Landing in the top 80 were sophomore Caity Hoffman (Garnerville, N.Y./Albertus Mangus HS) and freshman Alicen Wilbur (Saint James City, Fla./Ida S. Baker HS). Hoffman came across at the 20:03.84 mark to take 65th, while Wilbur set a new season-best time of 20:23.52 (77th), shaving a minute and 12 seconds off her previous time (21:35.80).
Also in the top 100 for the Green and Blue, sophomore Marjorie Ducos (Orlando, Fla./Winter Park HS) and classmate Gretchen MacMillan (Ocala, Fla./West Port HS) finished in 81st and 94th, respectively. Ducos clocked a time of 20:29.39 and MacMillan crossed the line at 20:53.40.
Redshirt sophomore Alyssa Sawyer (Key West, Fla./Key West HS) rounded out the scoring for the Green and Blue, placing 128th with a personal-best time of 21:51.31, knocking 19 seconds off her previous best (22:10.00). Senior Taylor Cooke (Homosassa, Fla./Lecanto HS) also ran at the event with a time of 22:08.72 (132nd).
The Eagles return to the course on Saturday, Oct. 8 with a trip to Orlando, Fla. to compete at the Disney World Cross Country Classic beginning at 7:45 a.m. Results and recaps from the event will be available at www.FGCUAthletics.com.
