Women's Cross Country Takes 4th Place at Disney World Classic
ORLANDO, Fla. – Led by junior Barrie Cohen’s (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional HS) seventh place finish in the 5K event, the FGCU women’s cross country team finished in fourth place at the 28-team Disney World Cross Country Classic at the Wide World of Sports Complex on Saturday morning.
“I think the fourth place finish was good,” said fourth-year head coach Cassandra Harbin. “The weather was difficult today, but the team didn’t worry about the things they couldn’t control and went out there and competed well this morning.”
The Eagles took fourth place with a total of 158 points, trailing only Tampa (48), FAU (62) and Drake (114). It was the Green and Blue’s highest finish this season in an event which featured more than 15 teams, and the team’s best since its second place finish at the season-opening FGCU Invite.
For the fourth straight event this season, Cohen was the top finisher for the Eagles. This time taking seventh out of 269 individuals, Cohen crossed the finish line at the 18:42.70. Sophomore Kelly Perzanowski (St. Clairsville, Ohio/St. Clairsville HS) has finished one-two with Cohen in each of the four events this season, and did so again on Saturday with a time of 19:00.20, good for 10th place.
Finishing side-by-side at the event were sophomores Marjorie Ducos (Orlando, Fla./Winter Park HS) and Caity Hoffman (Garnerville, N.Y./Albertus Mangus HS), placing 42nd and 43rd, respectively. Ducos crossed the finish line at the 19:59.20 mark, just ahead of Hoffman’s time of 19:59.50.
Also contributing to the Eagles’ scoring was freshman Alicen Wilbur (Saint James City, Fla./Ida S. Baker HS) and junior Shannon Compher (Oviedo, Fla./Hagerty HS). Wilbur recorded a time of 20:24.30 on her way to 64th place, while Compher finished at the 20:55.80 mark for 89th overall.
