Women's Golf Third in Golf Digest College Golf Guide
Tuesday, September 05, 2006
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University’s Men’s and Women’s golf teams are both ranked in the top 14 in the nation in the second annual Golf Digest College Golf Guide. In the September issue of Golf Digest, the men’s team is ranked 14th and the women’s team is 3rd. There were five different categories in computing the rankings. The five categories were team adjusted scoring average, player growth, academics, climate, coaches and facilities. The team adjusted scoring average spans the last four seasons and applies the formula used by NCAA committees to select postseason teams. The player growth category determines whether players on the program’s roster during the last four seasons improved. Academics were measured in the U.S. News & World Report’s guidebook for 2006. The Climate was a 30-year average of the number of days which golf could be played between September 1 and May 31. Coaches and facilities is the fifth category which the Golf Digest measure. This takes into account the coach’s experience and how the team has performed in the past. FGCU is entering its final season as an NCAA Division II independent. Next season, the Eagles will join NCAA Division I and participate in the Atlantic Sun Conference.
