FGCU Women's Golf Travels to Jacksonville for Spring Opener
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU women’s golf team will open up the 2010 spring season by heading to Jacksonville, Fla. for the 2010 JU Classic at the Hidden Hills Country Club. The two-day, two-round event will tee off on Monday with a 9 a.m. start and conclude on Tuesday afternoon.
The 18-hole course at the Hidden Hills Country Club facility in Jacksonville features 6,050 yards of golf for a par of 72. The course rating is 74.0 and it has a slope rating of 136. Designed by Arnold Palmer, the Hidden Hills golf course opened in 1966.
The Eagles will take to the course with Stetson, Samford, Daytona State, Jacksonville, Bradley, Cincinnati, Presbyterian, Bethune-Cookman, North Dakota, and South Dakota. Stetson comes into the event as the tournament favorite, ranked 72nd nationally according to Golfstat. The Hatters came in second last year to Campbell, while tournament host Jacksonville took fifth in the 10-team inaugural event.
As a unit, the Blue and Green placed in the top 10 in each of their fall competitions, highlighted by a second place finish at the 2009 FGCU Lady Eagle Invitational (9/21/09) to open the season. The Eagles followed that with a 10th place finish, in a field of 17, at the USF-Waterlefe Invitational (10/4/09) in Bradenton, Fla. and ninth out of 15 at the Wendy’s Invitational (10/18/09) in Charleston, S.C. FGCU concluded the fall season with another 10th place finish at the 32nd Annual FIU Pat Bradley Invitational (10/25/09), ahead of Cincinnati, FAU, Bradley, Murray State, and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to round out the field.
The Eagles will travel with five of their six golfers to compete in the 2010 JU Classic on Monday. The Blue and Green were led throughout the 2009 fall season by freshman Briana Carlson (Inverness, Fla.) who took top individual honors in her very first collegiate tournament. Making her debut at the 2009 Lady Eagle Invitational, the newcomer earned first place out of 21 individuals with a 223 (72-74-77) while leading the Eagles to a second place finish. Carlson submitted a 232 (83-76-73) at the USF-Waterlefe Invitational and tied for 10th out of 81 individuals at the CSU Wendy's Invitational with a two-round score of 153 (76-77). The freshman turned in a fall season-best 217 (70-73-74) at the Pat Bradley Invitational, which tied for sixth out of 79 individuals.
The Eagles have a pair of seniors in Jessica Paulmann (Sarasota, Fla.) and Amber Pedersen (St. Petersburg, Fla.), who each participated in three tournaments during the fall season. Paulmann finished with a 263 (86-96-81) at the 2009 Lady Eagle Invitational and submitted a fall-season best 253 (82-90-81) at the USF-Waterlefe Invitational. She also turned in a two-round 175 (87-88) at the CSU Wendy's Invitational. Pedersen finished with a 240 (85-74-81) at the USF-Waterlefe Invitational and submitted a two-round 166 (82-84) at the CSU Wendy's Invitational. She concluded the fall with a season-best 227 (75-74-78) at the Pat Bradley Invitational.
Junior transfer Lina Elmsater (Solna, Sweden) participated in all four tournaments during the 2009 fall season. She tied for seventh out of 21 individuals with a 237 (78-81-78) at the Lady Eagle Invitational and finished 11th out of 87 with a 223 (76-74-73) at the USF-Waterlefe Invitational. Elmsater submitted a two-round 161 (80-81) at the CSU Wendy's Invitational and turned in a fall season-best 222 (74-72-76) at the Pat Bradley Invitational, which tied for 15th out of 79 individuals. Fellow classmate Katerina Toomalatai (Palm Coast, Fla.) competed in three tournaments during the fall season and submitted a fall season-best 243 (79-86-78) at the 2009 Lady Eagle Invitational, which tied for 10th out of 21 individuals. Toomalatai finished with a 251 (92-84-75) at the USF-Waterlefe Invitational and scored a 249 (82-77-90) at the Pat Bradley Invitational.
Freshman Caroline Lennox (Pittsford, N.Y.) is the newest addition to the women’s golf team and will be participating in her first tournament as a member of the Blue and Green.
