Eagles Hold One-Stroke Lead at 2010 A-Sun Championship

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. – The FGCU women’s golf team sits atop the leaderboard heading into the second round of the 2010 A-Sun Championship in New Smyrna Beach, Fla. The Eagles hold a one-stroke lead over ETSU after Monday’s play at the Venetian Bay Golf Club.

FGCU, competing in its second A-Sun Championship, set a first-round scoring record with a 6-over 294, breaking Campbell’s mark of 296 set in 2007. The team score looks even more impressive after FGCU finished the round at 5-over par on the course’s four par-5 holes, which surrendered 27 birdies to the field in the first round.

"We have constantly been improving throughout the season," said head coach Brittany Bertilson. "It's no surprise that the team shot an opening round 294. The ladies have been working hard all season long, preparing for this final tournament of the year."

Sitting in a tie for second place, junior Katerina Toomalatai (Palm Coast, Fla.) and freshman Briana Carlson (Inverness, Fla.) each fired even par rounds of 72 to pace the Blue and Green. In addition to the FGCU duo, three other players finished at even par: Stetson's Alexandria Buelow, Kennesaw State's Jordan Lazenby and Jacksonville's Francesca Yong.

Seniors Amber Pedersen (St. Petersburg, Fla.) and Jessica Paulmann (Sarasota, Fla.) also submitted good first round scorecards. Pedersen is currently in a tie for ninth place with a one-round 74, while Paulmann turned in an opening round 76 for a share of 19th overall.

ETSU’s Laura Jansone, the Medalist at the 2008 A-Sun Championships, carded the lone sub-par round of the day, a 3-under, 69.

Second round action begins with opening tee shots at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday morning.
