Women's Golf in Fifth Place Heading into Second Round

GLENCOE, Ala. – The opening round of the 15th annual Chris Banister classic got underway at the Silver Lakes Golf Course on Sunday morning in Glencoe, Ala. At round’s end, the Eagles headed to the club house in fifth place, submitting a team score of 316.

In the field of seven, tournament host Jacksonville State currently sits atop the leaderboard with a day one shot total of 300, while defending champion Lamar University is in second place with a 309.

Competing in her first collegiate tournament, freshman Megan VanEtten (Trinity, Fla./J.W. Mitchell HS) leads the way for the Eagles at four-over par 76 (39-37), good for a share of sixth place overall. Sophomore Briana Carlson (Inverness, Fla./Citrus HS) is just a stroke back of VanEtten in eighth place with a first round 77 (38-39), while senior Katerina Toomalatai (Palm Coast, Fla./Flagler Palm Coast HS) sits in a tie for 13th after handing in a 79 (40-39).

Mercer University’s Lacey Fears shot a par round, 72 (36-36), to claim the top spot on the individual leaderboard heading into the second round.

Day two of the Chris Banister Classic will begin at 10 a.m. on Monday, with the final round set to conclude on Tuesday afternoon.
