USF-Waterlefe Invite Concludes With Women's Golf in Sixth
BRADENTON, Fla. – In their second tournament of the 2010 fall season, the FGCU women’s golf team finished play in sixth place on the 19-team leaderboard at the USF-Waterlefe Invitational on Tuesday afternoon at the Waterlefe Golf and River Club in Bradenton, Fla.
“I’m really proud of way the team came through in the final round of play,” said first-year head coach Meghan Spero. “After an extremely long day yesterday the team seemed a little down, but I am happy with the way they hung in there and came through with some strong scores in today’s final round.”
The opening round team score of 304 put the Blue and Green in a two-way tie for fourth overall, and a second round 317 placed the five-member squad in sole possession of eight place with a combined 621. The Eagles bounced back with their best round on the final day, firing a 303 and moved up two spots into sixth on the team leaderboard with their tournament total at 924.
Daytona State jumped Nova Southeastern on the final day to take home the team title with an 884 (296-299-289). Nova Southeastern turned in an 892 (294-298-300) for second overall. Taking third was tournament host USF’s 908 (303-305-300), followed by Middle Tennessee State (304-306-301/911) and Southern Mississippi (308-304-308/920).
The Eagles finished the two-day event one stroke ahead of fellow A-Sun member Stetson (310-307-308/925), who sat four strokes up on the Blue and Green entering the final round.
Ranking among the leaders in par 3 scoring (+2), par 4 scoring (+6) and birdies (7), freshman Megan Van Etten (Trinity, Fla./J.W. Mitchell HS) continued to lead the Eagles through the tournament’s final round, matching her best round of three-over par 75 and wrapping up the competition with a 226 (75-76-75) for a four-way share of 12th overall.
Just one stroke back of Van Etten, sophomore Briana Carlson (Inverness, Fla./Citrus HS) concluded the event in a tie for 16th with a 227 (71-81-75) after shooting a 75 on the final day. Carlson claimed the best single-round of the tournament in the opening round (71) for the Eagles and finished among the best in par 4 scoring (+5), par 5 scoring (+1) and total pars (34).
Senior Lina Elmsater (Stockholm, Sweden/Pfeiffer University) held the fourth best par 5 scoring in the field of 103 (2-under) and wrapped up play in a split of 25th with a 231 (76-77-78). Additionally, senior Katerina Toomalatai (Palm Coast, Fla./Flagler Palm Coast HS) and junior Fabienne Haremza (Wildermen, South Africa/Glenwood House/Lamar University) each shot their best round on the final day.
The Eagles will take some time to prepare for the next event at the two-day Pat Bradley Invitational on November 1-2. Set to take place locally, the tournament will be hosted by FIU in Fort Myers, Fla.
