Sunday, April 03, 2011

FORT MYERS, Fla. – In the final tune-up before the Atlantic Sun Conference championship, the FGCU women’s golf team is set to compete in the Hall of Fame Classic, hosted by Jacksonville on the World Golf Village’s Slammer and Squire course in St. Augustine, Fla. on Monday.

Hall of Fame members Sam (The Slammer) Snead and Gene (The Squire) Sarazen served as consultants to course architect Bobby Weed for Slammer & Squire. The 6,939-yard course offers views of the World Golf Hall of Fame from several holes and is distinguished by memorable par-3's, preserved woodlands and wetlands.

The 13-team field will match the Eagles up against Bethune-Cookman, Charleston Southern, Daytona State, Elon, FAU, FIU, Jacksonville, Memphis, Stetson, USC Upstate, UT-Pan American and Wofford.

Traveling to the event for the Blue and Green will be seniors Lina Elmsater (Stockholm, Sweden/Pfeiffer University) and Katerina Toomalatai (Palm Coast, Fla./Flagler Palm Coast HS), junior Fabienne Haremza (Wildermen, South Africa/Glenwood House/Lamar University), sophomore Briana Carlson (Inverness, Fla./Citrus HS) and freshman Megan Van Etten (Trinity, Fla./J.W. Mitchell HS).

In their last outing at the UC Spring Invitational (March 25-27), the Blue and Green moved up the team leaderboard in each of the three days. The Eagles opened in a tie for 18th and moved into the 15th spot following Saturday’s second round. With a team score of 307 in the final round, FGCU submitted a final scorecard of 935 (323-305-307) to finish in a two way tie with Marshall for 11th overall.

Fresh off her third Atlantic Sun Golfer of the Week award of the spring, Carlson has paced the Eagles with top five finishes in each of the three tournaments. After a two-over par 74 in the opening round, Carlson came back with a two-under 70 in round two and concluded with her best round of the season, 67, in the finale to finish with a three-round total of 211 (74-70(-2)-67(-5)) and earn medalist honors at the UC Invite. It marked the second time in her career that she earned a tournament title, winning the 2009 Eagle Golf Invitational in her collegiate debut.

The Hall of Fame Classic gets underway with rounds one and two commencing on Monday and the final round set to conclude on Tuesday afternoon. Results and recaps from each round will be available at www.FGCUAthletics.com following each day.
