Eagles in Sixth After Opening Round at A-Sun Championship
DeLAND, Fla. – With one round complete at the 2011 Atlantic Sun Conference Championship, the FGCU women’s golf team sits in sixth place. Junior Fabienne Haremza (Wildermen, South Africa/Glenwood House/Lamar University) holds a share of 12th place after the opening day.
“We got off to a great start today and let it slip away in the second half of the round,” said interim head coach Brent Jensen. “We did a great job of focusing on the shot in front of us for nine holes. We just need maintain that focus for a full 18 holes.”
The Eagles led the field as they made the turn, but a stretch of tough holes on the back nine moved the Blue and Green into sixth place on the 10-team leaderboard with a 306.
Kennesaw State leads the field into round two with a 294, three strokes ahead of second place Campbell (297) and four better than ETSU and Stetson, who share third overall with scores of 298.
With a three-over par 75, Haremza held the top score for FGCU, heading to the clubhouse in a share of 12th overall. A strong start to the day saw the Wildermen, South Africa native card birdies in four of her first five holes of the round.
Also contributing the Blue and Green score, sophomore Briana Carlson (Inverness, Fla./Citrus HS) sits in a tie for 18th following a four-over par 76, and senior Lina Elmsater’s (Stockholm, Sweden/Pfeiffer University) round of 77 moved her into a split of 22nd. Additionally, freshman Megan Van Etten (Trinity, Fla./J.W. Mitchell HS) submitted a day one tally of 78 to hold a share of 27th on the leaderboard.
Mercer’s Kimberly Graff sits atop the individual standings after opening the championship with a two-under par 70.
The 2011 Atlantic Sun Conference Championship will resume play with the second round on Tuesday morning. The event will come to a close following Wednesday’s final round.
