Wednesday, April 13, 2011

DeLAND, Fla. – Moving up the final leaderboard with their best round of the tournament, the FGCU women’s golf team fired a 303 on Wednesday to finish in a share of third place at the 2011 Atlantic Sun Conference Championship. With her highest finish of the spring, junior Fabienne Haremza (Wildermen, South Africa/Glenwood House/Lamar University) finished in second place overall, sitting just five strokes off the leader.

“I’m proud of the way the ladies played today,” said interim head coach Brent Jensen. “No one was striking the ball particularly well this week, but they were as mentally tough as they have been all year which helped them score better than they played.”

The Eagles opened the event with a round one score of 306 and followed with a 308 on Tuesday to move into fifth place in the 10-team field with one round to play. In Wednesday’s finale, the Blue and Green fired their best round of the tournament -303- to climb up into a share of third place at tournament’s end.

For the third year in a row, Stetson came away with the tournament title after combining for a three-round total of 894 (298-305-291). Campbell finished the event in second place with a score of 906 (297-303-306), while Kennesaw State (294-308-315) and ETSU (298-305-314) finished alongside FGCU.

On the individual leaderboard, Haremza led the Eagles through the three days and finished in sole possession of second place on the 50-player leaderboard with a 221 (75-72(E)-74). The Wildermen, South Africa native fired her best round of the spring in Tuesday’s second round with an even-par 72 on the way to her first top five finish.

With top five finishes in all five spring tournaments, sophomore Briana Carlson (Inverness, Fla./Citrus HS) finished the A-Sun Championship in a two-way tie for fifth with a score of 224 (76-75-73). For the spring, the Inverness, Fla. product carded five sub-par rounds, highlighted by a five-under par 67 at the UC Spring Invite where she took medalist honors for the second time in her career.

Tying her best single-round score with a 76 on Wednesday, freshman Megan Van Etten (Trinity, Fla./J.W. Mitchell HS) also contributed to the Blue and Green scorecard, finishing alone in 17th place with three-round total of 232 (78-78-76).
