Wednesday, April 27, 2011

FORT MYERS, Fla. – With top five finishes in seven tournaments this year, including all five spring competitions and one medalist honor, FGCU sophomore Briana Carlson (Inverness, Fla./Citrus HS) was a unanimous selection to the Atlantic Sun Women’s Golf All-Conference first team, announced by the league office on Wednesday.

“It's no surprise Briana was unanimously selected to first team All-Conference,” said interim head coach Brent Jensen. “She has an unbelievably mature outlook on life and has a great knack for this crazy game. She works extremely hard and keeps her emotions under control. I'm extremely proud and excited for her to receive such an honor.”

Carlson, who was named to the second team All-Conference and All-Freshmen team a season ago, becomes the first FGCU student-athlete to earn first team recognition.

During the fall season, Carlson placed among the top-10 in three of four events, including a pair of top five finishes. With three rounds of par or better, her best round of the fall campaign came at the USF-Waterlefe Invitational (Oct. 5) were she carded a one-under par 71.

Claiming top five finishes in all five spring tournaments, Carlson finished the season in a two-way tie for fifth with a score of 224 (76-75-73) at the 2011 A-Sun Championship. For the spring, the Inverness, Fla. product carded five sub-par rounds, highlighted by a five-under par 67 at the UC Spring Invite (March 27) where she took medalist honors for the second time in her career.

Holding a stroke average of 74.1 for the season, Carlson finished the year ranked No. 107 in the nation and No. 50 regionally according to GolfStat.com rankings.
