USF-Waterlefe Invitational Concludes with Women's Golf in Fourth Place
BRADENTON, Fla. – Wrapping up their second tournament of the fall season, the FGCU women’s golf team finished the USF-Waterlefe Invitational in a three-way tie for fourth place in the nine-team field on Tuesday afternoon. Each making their collegiate debuts at the event, the Eagles were led by freshmen Chelsea Guoynes (Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City Central HS) and Kristin Swindell (Bradenton, Fla./Braden River HS), placing in ties for 13th and 17th, respectively.
“Today was disappointing for us,” said first-year head coach Sarah Trew. “We were careless with some of our decisions and it really cost us coming in. We need to use this tournament as a learning experience and make some changes before the next event. If we start changing the way we think out there we will see our scoring average drop rather quickly."
Entering the final round of play in sole possession of fourth place, the Eagles combined for a final round score of 317 to bring their tournament total to 319-304-317/940. The Green and Blue finished the event in a three-way split for fourth place alongside Troy (320-321-299/940) and South Alabama (314-321-305/940).
Tournament host USF finished atop the final leaderboard with a score of 305-294-296/895, ahead of second place Southern Mississippi, 912, and Houston Baptist’s third place 916.
Guoynes led the Eagles in the field of 45 individuals, matching her best round of the tournament with a four-over par 75 on the final day to bring her final score to 82-76-76/234 to place in a tie for 13th overall. The newcomer also ranked among the leaders in birdies with seven.
Ranking second in total pars with 39, Swindell carded a final round 80, bringing her tournament score to 79-76-80/235, which was good for a two-way tie for 17th.
Carding the event’s lone eagle, senior Fabienne Haremza (Wildermen, South Africa/Glenwood House/Lamar University) concluded the event in four-way split for 24th with a scorecard of 77-73-88/238. Haremza led the event in par 5 scoring (-6) and also ranked among the leaders in birdies (6).
Turning in her best round of the event on Tuesday, juniorCassie Cleary (Punta Gorda, Fla./Charlotte HS/Daytona State College) submitted a 81-80-79/240 to move into tie for 28th. Cleary finished the par 3 holes at even-par, ranking second among the participants.
Also ranking second in par 3 scoring at even-par, freshman Georgia Price (Winchester, England/Fort Myers HS) rounded out the Eagles’ scoring with a 87-79-82/248. Price finished the competition in a two-way share of 36th.
Competing as an individual at the event, sophomore Megan Van Etten (Trinity, Fla./J.W. Mitchell HS) finished with a score of 87-88-89/264.
The Eagles will now prepare for the 34th Annual Pat Bradley Invitational hosted by FIU in Fort Myers, Fla. at the Pelican Preserve Golf Club. The tournament is set for one round each day from Sunday, Oct. 23rd to Tuesday, Oct. 25th. Results and recaps from the event will be available at www.FGCUAthletics.com at the conclusion of each day.
