FGCU Women’s Golf Opens Spring Season at Courtyard Classic in Jacksonville
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Coming off a fall season which featured three top five finishes, the FGCU women’s golf team will open the 2012 spring championship campaign with a trip to Jacksonville, Fla. for the Courtyard Classic hosted by Atlantic Sun foe Jacksonville. The 54-hole tournament gets underway with an opening round on Sunday morning and concludes on Tuesday afternoon at the Hidden Hills Golf Club.
“We are very excited to open up our spring season in Jacksonville,” said first-year head coach Sarah Trew. “We have been working very hard the last few weeks and are ready to jump back into competition. We are a player short this weekend due to some injuries, however I am confident if we take one shot at a time and stick to our game plan we can be successful. I firmly believe there isn't anything you could throw at this team that they could not handle.”
This year’s six-team field will put the Eagles and host Dolphins up against A-Sun members Mercer and USC Upstate, in addition to in-state foe FAU and two-time defending tournament champion Daytona State.
Leading the four-member FGCU squad into the competition is senior Fabienne Haremza (Wilderman, South Africa/Glenwood House/Lamar University), who was the Eagles top finisher in three of the four fall competitions while holding a 76.75 scoring average. Haremza closed the fall season with her best finish, placing second among the 45 participants at the Holiday Inn Express Hatter Classic with a 223 (73-73-77).
Rounding out the Green and Blue competitors are sophomore Megan Van Etten (Trinity, Fla./J.W. Mitchell HS), and freshmen Georgia Price (Winchester, England/Fort Myers HS) and Chelsea Guoynes (Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City Central HS).
Hidden Hills Country Club first opened in 1966 and was completely redesigned by Arnold Palmer in 1988. The 18-hole Hidden Hills championship layout plays 6,892 yards for a par of 72 with a course rating of 74.0 and a slope of 136. Located just 20 minutes from downtown Jacksonville in secluded Fort Caroline, Hidden Hills Country Club once played host to the Greater Jacksonville Open, which was the forerunner of today's PLAYERS Championship.
