Women's Golf Concludes Courtyard Classic in Fourth Place

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Despite improving their team score by nine strokes in the final round of play, the FGCU women’s golf team wrapped up the Courtyard Classic in Jacksonville, Fla. in fourth place on the leaderboard. Lowering her individual score in each of the three rounds, senior Fabienne Haremza (Wilderman, South Africa/Glenwood House/Lamar University) led the Eagles, finishing in a tie for fifth overall.

Entering the day in fourth place following back-to-back rounds of 317 to open the tournament, the Eagles came back with a 308 on the final day, bringing their team score to 317-317-308/942 to place fourth, just two strokes back of third place Daytona State’s 313-312-315/940. Mercer finished atop the leaderboard with a 296-311-301/908, ahead of second place tournament host Jacksonville’s 306-311-308/925.

Finishing the event second in the field of 33 individuals in par 3 scoring (-1) and total pars (37), Haremza concluded the three-day event with a round of 75, bringing her score to 77-76-75/228 to place in a two-way tie for fifth. The top five finish was the second in a row for Haremza, who finished second at the Holiday Inn Express Hatter Classic in the final tournament of the fall season.

Providing her best round of 75 on the final day, freshman Chelsea Guoynes (Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City Central HS) placed 10th overall with a scorecard of 76-81-75/232. Guoynes ranked among the leaders in total pars with 36 through the three days of competition.

Also contributing to the Green and Blue team score, sophomore Megan Van Etten (Trinity, Fla./J.W. Mitchell HS) and freshman Georgia Price (Winchester, England/Fort Myers HS) each provided their lowest rounds of the event on Tuesday. Sharing 17th overall, Van Etten’s round of 78 brought her score to 83-78-78/239, while Price supplied a three-round score of 81-82-80/243 to finish 22nd.

Mercer’s Lacey Fears earned medalist honors with a score of 220 (71-73-76).

The Eagles will return to the course on Monday, March 5 for the opening two rounds of the 54-hole Hurricane Invitational in Coral Gables, Fla. Results and recaps from all FGCU events are available at www.FGCUAthletics.com.
