Eagles Sit One Shot Off Leader After First Round of NIU Snowbird Intercollegiate
TAMPA, Fla. – With one round in the books at the NIU Snowbird Intercollegiate at the Pebble Creek Golf Club in Tampa, Fla., the FGCU women’s golf team sits in second on the 11-team leaderboard, just one stroke out of first place. All four FGCU golfers currently sit inside the top 15, with senior Fabienne Haremza (Wilderman, South Africa/Glenwood House/Lamar University) leading the way in a share of fourth place overall.
“Today we got off to a little bit of a bumpy start, but we were able to right the ship on the back nine,” said first-year head coach Sarah Trew. “I am very proud of the way we hung in there and saved the round. We are one shot out of first and if we stick to our game plan, and take one shot at a time, I am confident we can take home a win. All of our ladies had rounds in the 70s today and we still feel like we left some shots out there. I know tomorrow is our day to go low.”
The Green and Blue combined for an opening round score of 311, marking the second-best team round of the spring season. Entering Friday’s final round of play, the Eagles sit one shot back of McNeese State (310) and three strokes ahead of third place Chicago State (314).
Holding a two-way tie for fourth place in the 66-player field, Haremza opened the event with a score of 76. Ranking among the best in the field, the Wilderman, South Africa product sits second in total birdies (3) and ranks ahead of all players in par 3 scoring (-1).
Sitting in a five-way split of sixth overall, freshman Chelsea Guoynes (Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City Central HS) fired an opening round 77, supplying 11 total pars to rank among the best in the competition.
Each opening with rounds of 79, sophomore Megan Van Etten (Trinity, Fla./J.W. Mitchell HS) and freshman Georgia Price (Winchester, England/Fort Myers HS) are in a four-way tie for 12th on the leaderboard. Van Etten leads all individuals in par 5 scoring (-2), while Price matched Guoynes’ par total with 11 in the round.
McNeese State’s McKayla Anderson opened with an even-par 72, and enters the final round of play as the tournament leader.
The 36-hole tournament concludes with a final round on Friday, beginning at 8 a.m. at the Pebble Beach Golf Club. Results and a recap of the event will be available at www.FGCUAthletics.com.
