Women's Golf Secures Season-Best Finish at NIU Snowbird Intercollegiate

TAMPA, Fla. – In its best finish under first-year head coach Sarah Trew, the FGCU women’s team concluded the 36-hole 26th Annual NIU Snowbird Intercollegiate in third place on the 11-team leaderboard on Friday afternoon at the Pebble Creek Golf Club in Tampa, Fla. Senior Fabienne Haremza (Wilderman, South Africa/Glenwood House/Lamar University) and freshman Georgia Price (Winchester, England/Fort Myers HS) led the Eagles, placing in a tie for eighth overall.

“Today we struggled again on the front and managed to rebound on the back nine,” said Trew. “I'm proud of the team for hanging in there when we only had four players and could not drop a score. We definitely left some shots out there but we were in contention throughout the two days. The more we put ourselves in that position the more comfortable we will get, and that will help us to get a win under our belt.”

Entering the final day in second place following an opening round 311, the Green and Blue came out and shot a 316 in the finale to move into sole possession of third place overall with a tournament total of 627. The Eagles were four strokes back of second place McNeese State (310-313/623), while Southern Illinois earned the team title with a 316-304/620.

After opening the event with a 76 on Thursday, Haremza followed with a round of 80 on the final day to move into a tie for eighth on the 66-player leaderboard with a 76-80/156. Joining Haremza in eighth place, Price improved her score by two strokes (77) on the final day, bringing her two-round scorecard to 79-77/156. The eighth place finish is the lowest for the freshman this season.

Just one shot back of Harmeza and Price, freshman Chelsea Guoynes (Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City Central HS) finished in 10th place in the field with a score of 77-80/157. Rounding out the Eagles scoring at the competition, sophomore Megan Van Etten (Trinity, Fla./J.W. Mitchell HS) matched her opening 79 in the final round, to take 11th with a 158.

With an even-par 72 in the final day, Southern Illinois’ Margaret Gilley earned medalist honors with a 75-72/147.

The Eagles return to the course on Friday, March 23 when they travel to Crystal River, Fla. to compete in the UC Spring Invitational, hosted by Cincinnati at the Plantation Golf Resort. At last season’s event the Green and Blue tied for 11th among the 23 teams, and claimed the individual medalist honor on the strength of then-sophomore Briana Carlson’s (Inverness, Fla./Citrus HS) 74-70-67/211.
