CRYSTAL RIVER, Fla. – Opening the UC Spring Invitational on Friday afternoon in Crystal River, Fla., the FGCU women’s golf team sits in 11th place on the 19-team leaderboard entering Saturday’s second round of play. Freshman Chelsea Guoynes (Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City Central HS) leads the squad, sitting in a tie for 23rd overall.

“Today we got off to a bit of a rough start but seemed to settle in nicely after the first few holes,” said first-year head coach Sarah Trew. “Tomorrow we really need to focus on making better decisions and thinking about shots before we hit them. I am very proud of Chelsea for battling through an injury and putting up a solid score. I look for us to move up the leaderboard tomorrow.”

The four-member Eagle squad combined for a score of 313 in the opening round to sit in sole possession of 11th on the leaderboard, two strokes better than tournament host Cincinnati and Embry-Riddle’s 12th place scores of 315. FIU leads the field entering the second round with a score of 290.

Supplying the best score of the round for the Green and Blue, Guoynes sits in a four-way tie for 23rd in the 102-player field with a 76.

Sitting one shot back of Guoynes, fellow freshman Georgia Price (Winchester, England/Fort Myers HS) opened the event with a score of 77 for a share of 27th. Holding a split of 40th, sophomore Megan Van Etten (Trinity, Fla./J.W. Mitchell HS) contributed an 18-hole score of 78. Rounding out the first day for the Eagles, senior Fabienne Haremza (Wilderman, South Africa/Glenwood House/Lamar University) sits in a tie for 69th following an 82.

With a three-under 69, FIU’s Shelby Coyle sits atop the leaderboard entering the second round of play.

The UC Spring Invite will continue with one round on Saturday and a final round on Sunday, with both rounds scheduled for 8:30 a.m. shotgun starts.
