JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – In its final round of competition prior to the 2012 Atlantic Sun Conference Championship, the FGCU women’s golf team concluded the Marsh Landing Intercollegiate in seventh place on Tuesday afternoon at the Marsh Landing Country Club in Jacksonville, Fla. Supplying her best three-round collegiate score, freshman Georgia Price (Winchester, England/Fort Myers HS) led the Eagles, placing in a tie for 14th individually.

“Today we struggled a little as a team getting the ball into the hole,” said first-year head coach Sarah Trew. “I am very proud of the way that Georgia (Price) has stepped up for us the last two tournaments, and overall I think we have come together and fought very hard as a team recently. I know it is not easy to play a round a player down, let alone a whole semester, and I am so proud of our ladies for making the best of the situation and always fighting for every shot. We are very close to playing some really good golf and I look to see us peak next week at conference.”

Sitting in a tie for sixth place entering the final round of play, the Eagles matched their opening round score of 315 on the final day to slide into seventh place on the leaderboard with a score of 315-313-315/943. A-Sun foe Stetson finished atop the 10-team field with a score of 290-292-312/894.

Holding a share of 21st entering the day, Price lowered her score in each of the three rounds, culminating with a final round 75 to climb into a four-way tie for 14th overall with a scorecard of 78-77-75/230. The tournament marked the best three-round finish and the lowest three-round score of Price’s young career. The Winchester, England product’s final round score was also the second-best single round of her collegiate career, and matched her final round score from the Eagles’ previous tournament at the UC Spring Invitational (March 23-25).

Also heading into the finale in a tie for 21st on the leaderboard, senior Fabienne Haremza (Wilderman, South Africa/Glenwood House/Lamar University) and freshman Chelsea Guoynes (Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City Central HS) matched each other round-for-round, each finishing in a share of 25th with a scores of 77-78-80/235. Sophomore Megan Van Etten (Trinity, Fla./J.W. Mitchell HS) also contributed to the Eagles’ scoring at the event with a 83-80-80/243, to finish in a tie for 40th overall.

The Green and Blue now begin preparation for the 2012 Atlantic Sun Conference Championship. This year’s tournament will be held from April 9-11 at the Venetian Bay Country Club in New Smyrna Beach, Fla.

At last year’s conference event, the Eagles finished in a three-way share of third place with a 306-308-303/917. With her best finish of the 2011 spring season, Haremza placed second overall with a score of 75-72(E)-74/221, sitting just five strokes off the leader.
